£20,000 of support for festivals

TWO festivals being held in what will be the City of Culture in 2017 have been given £20,000 of council support.

Humber Street Sesh - now in its fourth year - attracts more than 40,000 people to as many as 11 live music stages and more than 180 acts. The event on August 1 promotes and celebrates the “excellence and diversity of Hull’s creative community.”

Hull Council is also funding Hull Folk Festival from August 14 to 16. Last year almost 10,000 people attended the three-day event held in venues around Hull Marina and the Fruit Market.

Council leader Coun Steve Brady said: “The music scene in the city is just growing every year and it is great to encourage and put some feeder money into it and really get them established.

“Obviously the more the council puts in, the more the Arts Council are interested in supporting them. A lot of these organisations do a vast amount of work themselves. It’s at a critical stage where they need that bit of financial support and in the build up to 2017 we expect more and more festivals are going to be put on round the city.”
