£21m contract to build centre for engineers

BUILDERS are set to start work on a new engineering graduate school at Sheffield University in the next few weeks after senior academics awarded a £21m contract to a national contractor.

Graham Construction, which has offices in London, Manchester and Sunderland, will provide the 5,300sq m building, with completion expected by September.

The school will be built at the corner of Broad Lane and Newcastle Street and will become the centre of the Faculty of Engineering’s postgraduate activities.

Director of estates and facilities management Keith Lilley said: “The Faculty of Engineering’s ongoing successful growth means that we urgently need to improve existing teaching and research facilities and develop new ones.

“This will be the first step in meeting the challenge of expanding and upgrading our engineering estate to meet the needs of 21st century engineering teaching and research.”
