£2.4m boost for social care at Scarborough

North Yorkshire County Council has invested around £2.4m in a programme to replace accommodation it says is outdated and inadequate with purpose-built, modern facilities.

The new centre – Castle House, in Elders Street – was officially opened by County Councillor Clare Wood, executive member for health and adult services.

The new facilities, which provide a day service for people with complex needs, include an interactive room, a quiet room, a kitchen, two changing places, and numerous meeting and activity rooms for the wider community. They are part of a £7.7m programme of work on day centres and respite care approved by the county council in 2011.

“This is a major investment which demonstrates our continuing commitment to supporting vulnerable people in our society,” Coun Wood said yesterday.

They say the new centre will allow people to lead independent lives.
