£4.6m bridge for flood-hit village

Work is to start on a temporary road bridge that will allow drivers to cross the River Derwent in Workington for the first time since the November floods, council chiefs said yesterday.

The two-lane, 350-tonne road bridge will be paid for by up to 4.6m of funding from the Department of Transport.

It is hoped it will be open to traffic, including HGVs, by May 28. Pedestrians and cyclists will also be able to use the bridge.
