£50,000 new look for sports ground

ONE of Hull's oldest sports grounds is to be redeveloped thanks to a £50,000 grant.

The investment from the Biffaward Landfill Communities Fund has been awarded to Hull YPI to improve its facilities at the Ferens Ground in Chanterlands Avenue.

The charity, which was founded in 1860, will spend the money on improvements including new double glazed windows for the main club room, the refurbishment and creation of additional space for women, new changing rooms and spectator facilities, and structural improvements to existing buildings.

Significant investment to cover other upgrades has already been made over the last three years.

The organisation is home to a range sports clubs including Hull Rugby Union Football Club and Hull YPI Cricket Club, plus tennis, bowls, table tennis, squash and athletics clubs.

The facilities are on 15 acres of land donated to young people in Hull in 1907 by Thomas Ferens.

Chairman of trustees Paul Hodgson said: "We are all obviously delighted to receive this grant from Biffa, which will go a long way to making further improvements to the facilities we are able to offer to the local community in Hull."
