£6.5m scheme for city flood protection

Plans for a new flood protection scheme in York have been announced.

Minister Huw Irranca-Davies revealed the decision to go ahead with works in the WaterEnd/Leeman Road area in a letter to local MP Hugh Bayley, made public yesterday.

Mr Irranca-Davies said the Environment Agency had provisionally allocated 6.5m to reduce the flood risk to 550 properties, starting in 2012 – although the funding might still be diverted if a more pressing case arose.

The Minister said: "The current standard of protection at Leeman Road is one of the lowest in York. A number of possible options have been identified, which may include increasing the height and extent of the existing defences.

"There will be a consultation in early 2010 as the agency wants to know what the local community want and to use all the information available to help select the best solution."
