£800,000 plan for chalet flood works

FLOOD defences near a chalet park in North East Lincolnshire are to be renewed after £785,000 was allocated to the project by the Environment Agency.

A 300-metre stretch of defences will be strengthened at the north end of the Fitties embankment, near Fitties Chalet Park.

New concrete posts and steel reinforcements will be put in and granite rock will be used to secure the posts against harsh tides.

Work will be carried out by contractors during the summer and completed by the end of the year.

Steve Redfearn, divisional manager for highways maintenance at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "After two years of hard work, we are thrilled to have been allocated funding from the Environment Agency.

"The current defence system has reached the end of its design life leaving small areas exposed due to by tidal action.

"A full refurbishment will ensure that the area will be secure for at least the next 20 years."

He added: "We are aware that there are conservation areas in and around where we plan to work. Environmentally, this is a low risk project and all involved will be mindful of their surroundings."
