Public asked to name city’s next legend

NOMINATIONS have opened for the next Sheffield Legend, whose name will join a list of 18 other luminaries who have been honoured by their home city.

Each member of the club has their name emblazoned on a plaque which is set in the pavement outside Sheffield Town Hall, in what is dubbed the city’s Walk of Fame.

Marketing Sheffield, which is running this year’s vote, said nominations will be open until Friday, February 22, before the top nominees are presented to an independent panel.

A spokesman said: “The panel, made up of key representatives from across Sheffield’s arts, sport, education, media and business communities, will then have the tough task of whittling down the nominees until this year’s Legend has been decided.

“The next Sheffield Legend will then join the likes of local heroes Lord Sebastian Coe, Sean Bean, Michael Palin and Jessica Ennis, by having their name immortalised in the paving outside Sheffield Town Hall.”

Following the announcement of each Legend, those honoured are then invited for a pubic unveiling ceremony.

Members of the public can vote for their Sheffield Legend by completing a simple online form via the Welcome to Sheffield website www.welcometosheffield.co.uk/sheffield-legends.

Nominations can also be made by sending a short letter to Sheffield Legends, Marketing Sheffield, Floor 1, Fountain Precinct, Balm Green, Sheffield, S1 2JA.
