Public lavatories given a brush-up

MORE than 20 public toilets in the East Riding are being refurbished.

East Riding Council is carrying out a series of improvements to public conveniences in towns and villages.

A total of 23 public toilet blocks are included in the programme, and so far 13 facilities have been upgraded in Beverley, Bridlington, Goole, Hedon, Hessle, Withernsea, Mappleton and Kilnsea.

One of the most dramatic improvements has been to the facilities near Willerby Square, which have been transformed inside and out and made more secure.

Council leader Stephen Parnaby said: "The refurbished facilities are a vast improvement, which will benefit residents and visitors as well as promoting the area for tourism."

Five of the facilities charge a small fee. Adults are charged 20p and children 10p to use council toilets in Queen Street, Bridlington; Hessle Square; Beverley Bus Station; Dyer Lane, Beverley; and at the Civic Hall in Market Green, Cottingham.

Work is due to finish this month on facilities in Stamford Bridge, and the council said a further nine toilets are now planned to be refurbished later this year in Bridlington, Hornsea, Cottingham, Beverley, Withernsea, Market Weighton and Howden.
