Public to see shops and stadium plans

BLUEPRINTS for a multi-million pound retail development and sports stadium on the outskirts of York are being showcased to the public today.

A public exhibition is being staged in the city centre to outline the plans for the re-development of land next to the Monks Cross retail park.

Developers from Oakgate (Monks Cross) Limited, the company behind the proposals, confirmed earlier this week that a 120,000sq ft Marks and Spencer store is being lined up for the site with the prospect of 200 jobs being created.

It is understood that talks are under way with other major retailers for the Monks Cross scheme, which would also see a new stadium for York City FC and York City Knights built.

The overall project on the Vangarde site, next to Huntington Stadium, would lead to about 750 new jobs and hundreds of construction roles being created. Oakgate (Monks Cross) Ltd expects to submit a planning application in the next few weeks.

The exhibition is being held at the Hilton Hotel, Tower Street today between 10am and 3pm.
