Public urged to have say in market talks

Over 2,000 people have already taken part in public survey about the future of historic Kirkgate Market, in Leeds.

Yesterday Leeds City Council said there was still time to get involved in the consultation which will help shape future plans for the market which will be debated later.

People still have the opportunity to go online at www.leedsmarkets.co.uk/strategy or complete a paper questionnaire, which are available in libraries and one stop centres, and the markets information office.

The closing date for the survey is Friday, but the consultation, which also includes focus groups and workshops, will finish on Friday, June 15.

The next stage will see Norfolk Property Services (NPS) collating all the information from the consultation, including the many focus groups and workshops that have taken place and feeding this into a feasibility study.

Drawing up the study will last 12 weeks, and a number of updates will be given throughout this time, before the options are presented in September.

The options, including the proposed designs, will then be open to feedback.

Coun Gerry Harper, the council’s markets champion said: “It is really important that we collect as many people’s view as possible, so that the future of the market is based on what the people of our city really want.

“The online survey is quick to fill in and gives you the chance to say what you want for the future of the market, and what if anything you would change. I would urge anyone who has not already completed a form to do so before the 8 June.”

The future of the market has been hotly debated – but the council hopes the public talks will lead to definite proposals for the market.
