Pubs given shatterproof 'glasses' to try to reduce injuries in attacks

SHATTERPROOF glasses are being handed out at East Riding pubs to try and get football fans on side.

Pubs in Beverley, Goole, Withernsea, Bridlington and Hessle were getting the unbreakable glasses just as World Cup fever takes hold.

It is hoped the polycarbonate glasses will cut the number of "glassing" attacks and accidents.

Landlords are expected to match the free plastic glasses issued as a part of the joint venture by Humberside Police and East Riding Council.

Licensing officer Chris Chapman from Humberside Police said: "We have been working alongside the licensees for some time now looking at ways to help reduce this issue of people getting injured by glasses and glass bottles.

"We fully support the decision to use only plastic bottles and plastic glasses in their premises, and hope that this helps encourage other pubs in the area to follow suit."

Mr Chapman, who spent the weekend with colleagues visiting pubs across the county, said there'd also be additional police patrols. He said they'd be taking "a very friendly approach – making sure everyone enjoys their football."

Polycarbonate glasses are not only safer but they last up to four times longer than glass. They also have insulating qualities.
