Pupils draw inspiration from views of artists

IT IS a city of views which have captured the imaginations of visitors from across the globe.

But children from York have given their own slant on which are most inspiring panoramas in the historic city.

A new exhibition has been unveiled in The Studio at York Art Gallery to showcase the work by 13 pupils who have painted themselves in front of their favourite view of the city. Entitled My York: Contrasting Perspectives, the display was created by the young people, who all have additional support needs, after they worked with artist Jo Walton and took inspiration from the art gallery’s own collections.

The exhibition is part of the York Stories project for the York 800 celebrations, which aims to encourage people to tell and share their experiences of the city to mark the 800th anniversary since it was granted a Royal Charter on July 9, 1212.

The art gallery’s assistant curator of art learning, Gaby Lees, said: “Each painting shows a view of York that is personal to the person who painted it.

“It has been fascinating to speak to the pupils about why they chose that particular spot.“ The exhibition, which includes views ranging from Ouse Bridge to York Boxing Club, as well as the Shambles and shops in the city centre, began on Monday and will be staged throughout this week.
