Pupils to get police escort to school

POLICE officers from two neighbouring forces are to travel on school buses to try to improve pupil safety.

Humberside Police officers will ride to and from South Axholme School in Epworth to build relationships with young people and discuss any issues of concern.

Because the catchment area stretches into Nottinghamshire, an officer from that force will also take part.

The project starts today and follows a similar partnership arrangement at The Vale of Ancholme School.

Sergeant James Main, of Humberside Police, said: “The project at the Vale of Ancholme School has already proved to be of great benefit, and along with the Safer Schools partnership we have running, these two schemes give us a great opportunity to engage with young people.

“The project is about promoting safety and engagement with the young people who can often be seen as a hard to reach group.”

A North Lincolnshire Council spokesman added: “There can’t be many opportunities where the police are able to directly and informally link up with young people and speak to them about their lives, needs and concerns.”
