Pupils given taste of university life

School pupils from across the region have been introduced to student life at Sheffield University, as part of a series of events encouraging pupils to consider higher education.

More than 100 pupils from seven different schools in Yorkshire took part in a wide range of activities, including a campus tour and a University Challenge-style quiz, during two separate sessions.

The Discover Us events are aimed at pupils from Years 9 to 11 who have the potential to attend university, but do not have a family tradition of continuing in education.

Schools which took part included Crofton High School, Hemsworth High School and Minsthorpe Community College, Wakefield; Clifton School in Rotherham, and Sheffield schools Parkwood Academy, Hinde House School and Fir Vale School.

The days were organised by the university’s outreach and access team.

Rosie Fenner, a third-year student from the University’s School of English, who was a student ambassador for the event, said: “The pupils were really interested in the activities and were very keen to experience university life.”
