Pupils push boundaries with special lessons on National Cricket Day

SCORES of children took time out from lessons to meet England and Yorkshire all rounder Adil Rashid and England Women's Ashes winner Katherine Brunt at a special cricket class yesterday.

The pupils from Burley Matthias' Church of England Primary School in Leeds took part in a day of cricket activity in the classroom and playground on Brit Insurance National Cricket Day. The flagship event is part of activity taking place nationwide in hundreds of schools to raise awareness of and funds for Chance to Shine supported by Brit Insurance – the Cricket Foundation charity's campaign to educate two million children through cricket by 2015.

To achieve its aims 25m needs to be raised through private donors with the Government pledging to match the funds.

The cricket day also provides a focus for the charity's 2010 public appeal Step up to the Crease. The Cricket Foundation is asking schools, cricket clubs and the cricket-loving public in the area to raise small amounts for Chance to Shine through fun, cricket-themed fundraising activity.

A school spokeswoman said: "The children enjoyed their special day.'' Chance to Shine is one of the single biggest grassroots sports development programmes in Britain.
