Queen joins 1,000 pupils at Abbey

THE Queen led senior members of the royal family and leaders of various UK faiths at a lively observance ceremony marking Commonwealth Day.

She was joined by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Countess of Wessex for the event in Westminster Abbey which was attended by more than 1,000 schoolchildren.

Contributions ranged from Canadian singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright who performed Hallelujah, to the greeting call of a wild chimpanzee given by primatologist Dame Jane Goodall.

Other performers included the Scots Makar, or national poet, Liz Lochhead who read her poem entitled Connecting Cultures – which is the theme of this year’s Commonwealth Day.
