Queen renews bond of friendship

The Queen renewed a 300-year bond of friendship with a group of North American indigenous people yesterday as she joined Sunday worshippers at the Cathedral Church of St James in Toronto.

The Very Rev Douglas Stoute, Dean of Toronto and Rector of the Cathedral, gave the sermon themed around American independence day. After the service the senior cleric praised the British Monarchy's links with the North American indigenous people. He said: "Three hundred years ago members of the Mohawk community visited Queen Anne. They came to pledge their loyalty, they came to ask that she help them by sending a priest and help them in the construction of a chapel – this they did. And the association between the Crown and the Mohawk people has been strong ever since."
