Race-fall jockey airlifted to hospital

A jockey was airlifted to hospital after he suffered hip and pelvic injuries during a race meeting.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said the rider was flown to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital after three jockeys were hurt during a meet at Ludlow Racecourse in Shropshire.

The Midlands Air Ambulance, based at Cosford, near Wolverhampton, and a land ambulance were both sent to the scene at about 6pm on Thursday. An ambulance service spokeswoman said: "Crews arrived at the racecourse to find three jockeys who were being cared for by the on-site medical team.

"One man suffered hip and pelvic injuries in the fall. He was given pain relief and his condition was stabilised at the scene. He was immobilised with a neck collar, spinal board and a pelvic splint before being airlifted to hospital."

Another jockey, who had been knocked unconscious, was taken by land ambulance to the Hereford County Hospital, the spokeswoman added.

The jockeys, who were taken to hospitals in Hereford and Shrewsbury, were said to be Richard Johnson and Andrew Glassonbury.

A spokesman for Ludlow Racecourse said both men had been discharged from hospital.
