Racecourse plans are under starter’s orders

Work on the first stage of the re-development of York Racecourse is set to get under way in the coming weeks after a contractor has been appointed.

Under the proposals, the northern end of the course will be redeveloped in a move to improve facilities for horses, jockeys and racing fans.

Initial works will begin on Tuesday, but the majority of the scheme will get under way on October 12. The whole northern end development project will be completed in several phases over a number of years, with most of the building work being carried out outside the race seasons.

It was announced yesterday that Lindum York has been appointed as the main contractor.

Chief executive and clerk of the course William Derby said: “It is very exciting that we are about to start the first physical works on this project which will further improve this end of the racecourse for horses, horsemen and racegoers.”

The work this winter includes the creation of a new, larger, pre-parade ring complete with modern saddling boxes, vet treatment and wash down areas, which is due to be up and running in May 2014.

The project will also see a new weighing room created and the multiple canopies outside the Grade II* listed John Carr grandstand will be replaced with a less intrusive single canopy. Last summer tens of thousands of racing fans thronged to York to see Frankel and it helped persuade bosses investment was needed if it was to continue to attract the big names.

Mr Derby added: “The investment in facilities and new space created will improve experience of racing at York.”
