RAF veteran is 50,000th in return scheme

An RAF Bomber Command veteran was named yesterday as the 50,000th person to benefit from a grant scheme helping Second World War servicemen travel back to the places they saw action.

Gordon Mellor, 91, from Wembley, north London, is due to be presented with his award this morning at the Imperial War Museum.

The Heroes Return scheme, financed by the Big Lottery Fund, was set up in 2004 to mark the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

To date 24.3m has been awarded by the fund, which is now committing an extra 1 million over the next year to assist veterans in making commemorative battlefront journeys.

Mr Mellor used his funding to return to France in October where a memorial was held for escapees who died crossing the Pyrenees and for people who were killed for helping them.
