Railway man honoured after rescue attempt

A York railway worker has been recognised for his valiant effort to save an elderly man who died after suffering a heart attack at the city’s station.

East Coast customer service assistant Richard Millbank has been named as Britain’s top station employee in the rail network’s national staff awards.

After the alarm was raised on June 12 this year, the qualified first aider rushed to the scene to help the pensioner, who was unconscious and not breathing, while comforting the man’s frightened family.

Mr Millbank attempted CPR and used one of the defibrillators kept on the station to try to restart the man’s heart following his cardiac arrest.

However, despite being rushed to York Hospital by ambulance minutes later, the man did not survive. His family returned to York station a few weeks later to thank Mr Cantrell personally for his attempts to save him.

East Coast’s station manager at York, Phil Crow, said: “Richard is a caring and very helpful member of the team at York station and we’re delighted that the dedication he shows in helping passengers every day has been deservedly recognised at a national level.”
