Railway signals new era for learning

A NEW learning centre officially opened on a station platform on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway over the bank holiday.

The facility on Platform 2 of Pickering Station will the preserved line realise a long-held ambition to run a heritage education programmes for youngsters and local groups.

The two-storey building, with a large classroom, purpose-built archives and a smaller reading room, has been named the Reussner Education Centre, in memory of Graham Reussner, the railway's former archivist.

The Learning Centre is part of a broader education-themed regeneration programme at Pickering station. A new Visitor Centre is also under construction on Platform 2, due for completion at the end of the year.

The third phase includes restoring the roof

Educational programmes will include how steam engines work, Victorian railways, wartime evacuation, rail history, and signalling.
