Ranger takes a leaf out of bushcraft book

Ranger Neil Thirkell got busy in one of Yorkshire's largest forests brushing up on the kind of bushcraft skills made famous by television survival experts Ray Mears and Bear Grylls.

The Forestry Commission is staging an event in the 8,600-acre Dalby Forest, near Pickering, next week to showcase the skills needed to build dens which can provide vital protection from the elements.

Ranger Mark Barker said: "Getting out in the fresh air learning how to cope in the wilds is the ultimate escape from the stresses of modern life.

"It's surprising what you can do with a few raw materials and bit of know how and we'll be putting dens through there paces by sprinkling them with water to prove their rain-proof qualities."

The den-making event will be staged on Bank Holiday Monday between 10.30am and 12.30pm and then from 2pm until 4pm. The cost for the sessions is 5 per person, or 15 for a family of four. Under-12s must be accompanied by an adult, and booking is required by calling 01751 472771.
