Rare wines set to go under the hammer at auction house

The first ever wine sale at a North Yorkshire auctioneers is set to attract buyers from across the globe.

A selection of rare wines, ports and whiskies are set to go under the hammer at Tennants in Leyburn – with some bottles expecting to fetch over £1,000.

Labelling it one of the biggest wine sales in the north, Tennants wine and whisky valuer Mark Littler said: “We have about 370 lots in total and we have all the best wines and vintages. We have a fantastic selection of first growth wine, which is the best of the best, from years such as 1937.

“We also have other drinks, including 20 bottles of cognac from 1808. It’s rare enough to find one bottle never mind 20.

“We have a wine from 1945, which could go for up to £1,000 for one bottle. We have also got over 600 bottles of port, including over 120 bottles of Taylor’s 1970. These are expected to go for up to £150 a bottle. An original case of Chateau Latour 1964 is expected to fetch up to £4,000.

Mr Littler said he expected the sale to be extremely popular with wine enthusiasts.

“This sort of stuff doesn’t come out of the woodwork very often,” he said. “It should pull in people from all over the world, including China as the Chinese are big buyers of wine.”

The auction is taking place on November 26 and bids can also be taken online.
