Referee and top chef in Yorkshire honours

HOWARD WEBB, Marco Pierre White and Barbara Taylor Bradford were among the stars recognised at the 22nd annual Yorkshire Awards last night.

The awards, organised and run by the Yorkshire Awards Committee, aim to recognise those individuals and organisations that have had an impact on Yorkshire and its people.

Nominations were open for the people in the region to put forward someone who they felt acted "as (an] inspiration to anyone with the real interests of Yorkshire at heart".

Yorkshire Man of the Year, chef Marco Pierre White, returned to the county this month when he took a partnership in Ilkley restaurant The Box Tree, rejoining the kitchen were he started work as a chef.

Football referee Webb, winner of the sporting achievement award, took charge of an angry World Cup Final between Spain and the Netherlands in July.

Previous winners at the awards include Lance Bombardier Ben Parkinson in 2009, the soldier who came into the public eye during his battle back to health after being seriously wounded by a landmine in Afghanistan in 2006.

Charity worker and chronic arthritis sufferer Claire Wood was named community hero.

Aged 30, Ms Wood needs help to get in and out of her chair at home but, rather than worry about her own problems, she dedicated her time to organising charity events from her hospital bed.

The other winners were Leeds-based supermarket chain Asda, charity Help for Heroes, film producer Mark Herbert and Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire Dr Ingrid Roscoe, who received the lifetime achievement award.
