Region gets £440m 
transport cash boost

The 44 new sustainable transport schemes will include £64m investment from the Government, said Transport Minister Baroness Kramer.

And millions of pounds will be spent to help boost transport schemes in Leeds, Sheffield and York to bring environmental, health and economic benefits to communities across England.

Money will support i-Travel York to enable the roll-out of a Low Emissions Strategy, intensify engagement with businesses through workplace travel plan programme and provide a comprehensive residential campaign to reduce congestion and improve health on one of the most congested corridors.

The go:green for growth in West Yorkshire scheme will complement the Leeds City Region Strategic Economic Plan and build on current activities including ‘Smart Ticketing’ developments to increase payment options.

Sheffield will also receive funds to boost the range of travel options available to residents.

The Department for Transport is providing £64m towards the schemes in the latest round of its Local Sustainable Transport Fund, with Local Enterprise Partnerships investing more than £100m of the funding they received earlier this week as part of the Local Growth Fund.

Baroness Kramer said: “We want more people to choose to travel in a way that cuts congestion and carbon, delivering economic and environmental benefits.

“This funding will make that choice easier for millions of people across the country, delivering new sustainable transport schemes throughout England.”
