Remains at lake thought to be human

POLICE are investigating the discovery of what are believed to be human remains in a lake in the East Riding.

The grisly find was made on Thursday afternoon at Welton Waters, a former gravel pit near the River Humber and about three miles west of the Humber Bridge.

Police divers carried out preliminary searches of the lake in Common Lane, Welton, which is home to Welton Sailing Club.

The remains have been taken away for analysis, although Humberside Police said officers were not treating the discovery as suspicious.

A spokeswoman said: “We got a call at about 2.20pm after a member of the public found some sort of remains in Welton Waters.

“The remains have been removed and will be taken away for examination.”

Although near the Humber, the 100-acre lake is enclosed and not connected to the estuary.

As well as being home to the sailing club, the area is considered a beauty spot and is also popular with ramblers and dog walkers.

Residents were first alerted to the find by the sound of the police helicopter circling overhead.

One villager described the find as “dreadful”.
