Residents give voice to local history

People in Barnsley are set to have their voices recorded through a scheme which aims to create the town's first "sound archive."

This weekend marks the start of the initiative, which is part of the new Experience Barnsley project based at the Town Hall.

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the sound archive will see 150 people having their voices recorded and kept for future generations to listen to, to find out about the history of Barnsley and what the town was like in 2011.

A spokesman for Barnsley Council said: "As part of Barnsley History Day at The Civic this Saturday, January 8, visitors will be able to suggest who could be interviewed in the months ahead and also volunteer to be part of the interviewing team.

"To start things off, there will be a Markets Memories workshop at 10.45am and Barnsley FC legend Norman Rimmington will be answering fans' questions at 11.30am. There will also be a free raffle for those taking part.

"There are activities all day, with more than 50 stands from across Barnsley, performances, family activities and much more."

Barnsley History Day will take place on Saturday from 10am to 3pm. Entry is free.
