Residents given say on travel plans for region

NORTH Yorkshire County Council is calling on residents to give their views about how transport across the county can be improved.

The council is preparing its third Local Transport Plan which will set out the plans and strategies for maintaining and improving all aspects of the local transport system from 2011 to 2016.

This will replace the second Local Transport Plan which finishes in March 2011.

The Government requires all local transport authorities like North Yorkshire County Council to produce a Local Transport Plan. In order to help the county council understand what people in North Yorkshire want to see in the plan the council is providing a series of opportunities for members of the public to put their views across.

The draft plan identifies plans for improving road safety, easing congestion and promoting the benefits of sustainable modes of transport.

County councillor John Fort, North Yorkshire's Executive Member for Highways, said: "We want to keep the county on the move and to make our roads as safe as possible in order to support our communities and businesses. If we are to continue to provide a high quality transport service then we need to take into account people's views about any improvements we can make."

There are also going to be seven public exhibitions held across the county where members of the public can discuss the plan in more detail.
