Residents return home after fire in North Yorkshire village

Residents had been evacuated from nearby homes as firefighters battled the blaze at an MOT test centre.

Five fire engines and an aerial platform ladder were called to deal with the fire at the garage on Ingleton Industrial Estate, New Road, Ingleton, just before 6.30pm on Friday evening.

Police say a decision was made to evacuate dozens of properties within a 200, safety cordon due to the presence of hazardous materials including gas bottles on the site.

“Thankfully, nobody was injured and the people who were taken to the local community centre where they were supported by the county council, were allowed to return to their homes at around 11.30pm once the fire was under control,” North Yorkshire Police said in a statement. “The A65 also re-opened at the same time.

“Fire crews left the scene at 2.30am today, Saturday March 11, but are due to return later this morning for further examinations. At this stage, the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

“Residents and businesses are thanked for their co-operation and support during the emergency operation.”
