Resort on knife-edge as regeneration plan publication delayed

THE publication of a crucial report into a regeneration masterplan for Bridlington has been delayed.

The report into the Bridlington Area Action Plan was due to be published on Monday, but plan author East Riding Council said yesterday it was not likely to be available until the end of next week.

The report, by planning inspector Sian Worden, follows an inquiry into the legal compliance and soundness of the plan, which would guide development in the resort for the next nine years and could lead to up to £200m of investment.

It is viewed by supporters as the best - and some say final - opportunity to deliver significant change in Bridlington, the most socially and economically deprived town in the East Riding.

But opponents claim it would harm businesses in the town centre, and Bridlington Harbour Commissioners say it would jeopardise their ability to operate the port, which is home to one of the most lucrative shell-fishing fleets in England.

The plan aims to make Bridlington “once again the jewel of East Yorkshire’s coast”.

It aims to deliver a sustainable economy, create about 1,900 jobs, make Bridlington “a great place to live”, and provide year-round appeal to visitors.

Four major schemes are planned: Burlington Parade, a large mixed-use retail, housing and leisure development; an access, movement and parking strategy; public realm improvements; and a redeveloped harbour and marina – a project first envisaged more than 40 years ago.

The plan also says that underperforming guest houses and B&Bs should be encouraged to improve or change use to make the town more attractive to a hotel developer.
