Resort makes feature of ‘erratic’ Ice Age boulder

IT has barely merited a second glance for generations of residents in Hornsea.

But now the town has made a feature of the large boulder that was moved to a verge on Southgate by two carthorses more than 80 years ago.

The stone is actually a “glacier erratic”, which means it is of volcanic origin and was deposited in the area by a vast ice sheet during the Ice Age.

It has now been fenced off and a stainless steel information board describing how it got there has been put up in a joint project between Hornsea Area Renaissance Partnership and the new Tesco store nearby.

Partnership chairman, Coun Barbara Jefferson, said: “This is one of a series of informative displays and boards which Hornsea Area Renaissance Partnership have been developing over the past couple of years and it is great to see it completed.

“We would like to thank Tesco for their support in getting it produced and also the Hull Geological Society for their assistance in researching the origins of the stone. Highlighting the wealth of interesting and important heritage assets that Hornsea has to offer is important not only to attract visitors but also to inform local people, especially young people, about the rich history of the town.”
