Restaurants evacuated in 999 alerts

CUSTOMERS were evacuated from two South Yorkshire restaurants in separate incidents on Tuesday evening after the fire brigade were called.

Crews were called to the McDonald’s branch in Sandford Road, Balby, Doncaster, at 8.40pm after a carbon dioxide tank started leaking.

Around six staff and seven customers had already been evacuated from the premises, as carbon dioxide can be dangerous to health in confined spaces.

Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus disconnected the tank, which provided the supply to fizzy drinks, and ventilated the restaurant.

At a similar time, crews from Sheffield were dealing with a fire at the Wig and Pen gastro pub in Campo Lane.

Firefighters were called at 8.47pm and arrived within four minutes to find a tumble dryer “well alight” in the basement.

A fire service spokesman said: “The basement, which contained the kitchen and storage areas, suffered some heat and smoke damage due to the fire, which is believed to be due to an electrical fault.

“Nobody was injured in the blaze.”
