Revealed: The four most dangerous roads in Yorkshire

Eight in 10 of the deadliest highways have badly-worn centre line markings, according to a report from the Road Safety Markings Association (RSMA).

Half the lines on these most-dangerous roads fall below the minimum specifiable standards, the association added.

Its findings came from a survey of the most dangerous roads that have already been identified by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF).

The RSMA said that one of the worst roads - a five-mile section of the A6135 north of Sheffield - had the poorest road markings in the survey, with three-quarters of markings non-existent or highly worn.

The association said that, of the previously-worst roads deemed by the RSF to have improved the most, seven had undergone targeted road marking treatments, with improvements resulting in cutting fatal and serious crashes by as much as 74%.

George Lee, national director of the Road Safety Markings Association, said: "The evidence is stark: eight out of 10 of our most deadly roads have the most deadly markings, or in many cases, no markings at all.

"The Government is supportive of measures that can deliver substantial rates of return on spending where lives can be saved. Road Minister Mike Penning has given us his assured commitment to road safety."

Mr Lee went on: "Road safety engineering programmes have too often been viewed as discretionary by many authorities and adoption can therefore be hit and miss.

"This report flags up some serious concerns for the overall conditions of our road network now, and central government's support is vital in hitting home the message that deadly road markings are costing lives."

These were the eight roads with poor white lines:

A61 Barnsley to Wakefield in Yorkshire;

A642 from the M62 junction 30 (Wakefield) to the A61 (Wakefield) in Yorkshire;

A645 Knottingley to the A1041 (Snaith) in Yorkshire;

A6135 Ecclesfield to the M1 junction 36 (Hoyland) in Yorkshire;

A581 from the A59 (Rufford) to the A49 (Chorley) in Lancashire;

A675 from the M65 junction 3 (Blackburn) to Preston in Lancashire;

A675 from the M65 junction 3 (Blackburn) to Bolton in Greater Manchester;

A281 from the A23 (Pyecombe)to the A272 (Cowfold) in West Sussex.
