Road improvements to ease town congestion completed

The first phase of work to improve the A630 Balby Road in Doncaster has been completed.

All lanes are now open following work between Alexander Road and Greenfield Lane, which has seen the road resurfaced, new footpaths built, traffic signals improved, new kerbing and lighting, the filling in of an existing subway and a new pedestrian crossing constructed.

The improvements are aimed at easing congestion along Balby Road, one of Doncaster’s busiest routes.

Peter Dale, Doncaster Council’s director of regeneration and environment, said: “Motorists and road users have shown great patience during the works and will start to see real benefits in terms of reduced journey times and improved road safety once the full programme is finished.”

Subject to funding from the European Regional Development Fund, phases two and three of the works between the Hall Flat Lane junction and Greenfield Lane should begin in the autumn and take about five months to complete.

However, further disruption along Balby Road could be expected in May when the M1 Corridor Gas Alliance continues its project to replace the main gas supply along the A630.

Work has already been completed near the junction with the A1 and attention will now turn to sections closer to the town centre.

A Doncaster Council spokesman said: “To minimise delays during these essential works, the council will be working closely with the Gas Alliance to ensure appropriate traffic management systems are in place.”
