Garrison Road officially changed its name to Roger Millward Way with a rare red and white sign, in a tribute to the Hull Kingston Rovers player and coach who died in 2016.

Affectionately known as Roger the Dodger, he is perhaps best known for leading KR to Challenge Cup glory in 1980, beating Hull FC 10-5 in the final at Wembley.

She said: "It is more than we hoped for. It is great people want to remember him in this way - he'd be as proud as we are."

Mr Millward played for Great Britain and England and became an icon of the game during his spell at Craven Park, making 406 appearances, scoring a club record of 207 tries and kicking 607 goals.

The city already has roads in the names of two other sporting heros - Raich Carter, "the finest English inside-forward of his generation" and rugby league player Clive Sullivan.

Coun Brady said Mr Millward summed up "everything about the fighting spirit of East Hull people. Rovers have always fought against the odds."

Nine new signs have gone up marking Roger Millward Way, which runs from Market Place junction to the roundabout by Hull Jail.
