Road safety message is turned into stage drama

THE curtain has gone up on a new initiative to help North Yorkshire's older drivers stay safe behind the wheel by taking a seat in the theatre.

A comedy drama called Urban Rodeo is to tour the county next month to promote a serious safety message in a light-hearted but sensitive way.

Performed by Baldy Bane Theatre Group from Scotland, the play is based on a family journey, with an older driver behind the wheel.

From April 19 the 40-minute show is being brought to nine different venues in one week by North Yorkshire County Council working with 95 Alive, the York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership.

Funded by the Government, the show is running alongside the Older Driver road shows being held across North Yorkshire this year. Those who have taken part in the road shows are still recommended to book a seat.

County Coun John Fort, executive member for road safety, said: "We hope that events like this will help get our message home to older drivers.

"Using theatre and humour, we hope to encourage people to think about their driving and be more aware of the different issues that affect them as they get older. Keeping up to date can keep you safe and independent."

The play will travel to different venues around the county from April 19th. Anyone who would like to attend should call 08458 727374 to book.

The production will visit Ripon, Grassington, Pickering, Scarborough, Northallerton, Richmond, Easingwold, Selby, and Skipton.

The dangers of elderly motorists not paying attention to their driving abilities were underlined nine years ago when Megan Raybould, aged two, died in an accident involving a 79-year-old driver in Scarborough.
