Road to close for repairs before winter

drivers have been warned that one of the steepest routes in the country will be closed for repairs ahead of the winter.

The A170 at Sutton Bank, near Thirsk, will be shut for a week from midnight on September 10 while North Yorkshire County Council carries out annual maintenance.

The council’s executive member for highways, Councillor Gareth Dadd, admitted the work will cause some disruption, but maintained it is vital to ensure the key strategic route remains in good order.

The work this year will include replacing the crash barrier and inspecting the rock face.

Hundreds of lorries fail to negotiate Sutton Bank each year, especially in icy conditions. Three sections of the road rise at 25 per cent, or a one in four gradient.
