Roll up, roll up, as city counts down to all the fun of the fair

THE nights are drawing in and there is an autumnal chill in the air – it can mean only one thing, Hull Fair is on its way.

Dating back to the Middle Ages, the fair is one of the biggest in Europe and draws more than 500,000 visitors to its 16-acre site in Walton Street.

It features more than 250 attractions, more than a mile of stalls and mixes traditional fairground activities such as palmistry and hook-a-duck stalls alongside the latest white-knuckle rides. Thrill-seekers this year can try the daunting “Air Ride”, which is new to the fair and is 50ft high, breathtakingly fast and not for the faint-hearted.

There will also be more than 50 rides for children and the traditional fairground snacks of candy floss, brandy snap and toffee apples.

Coun Terry Geraghty, portfolio holder for leisure and culture at the city council, said: “The sights, smells and traditions of Hull Fair never fail to pull in the crowds and create a fun atmosphere in the city. We welcome visitors new and old and hope the people of Hull and those who travel in from further afield enjoy this year’s offerings, whether going for something fast and furious or fun and traditional.”

The fair begins on Friday, October 7, and apart from Sunday, October 9, is open daily from 4pm to 11pm until Saturday, October 15.
