Roman life to return to city building

A ROMAN festival in York will be staged this month in the grounds of one of the city's hidden architectural gems.

The festival will be held on Saturday May 29 and Sunday May 30 in the grounds of Grays Court, one of York's most historic buildings nestling beside the city walls and alongside Treasurer's House.

A small Roman camp will be set up in the grounds where historical re-enators will demonstrate weapons, armour, food and cooking, medicine, religion and bathing.

On the Saturday, the house will be the setting for an evening of Roman-style food and drink, followed by an auction to raise funds for a bigger festival next year.

Grays Court, which is now a tearoom and bistro, is thought to be the oldest continuously occupied house in the country.
