Royal Mail close to hitting post delivery targets

Most letters were delivered on time in the past few months, although the Royal Mail narrowly missed its first-class post target, new research has shown.

The company delivered 98.6 per cent of second-class letters within three days of posting in the six months to September against a target of 98.5 per cent, while 96.7 per cent of standard parcels arrived on time, 6.7 per cent above the target.

First-class deliveries reached 92.6 per cent, just below the 93 per cent target.

In the three months to September, 98.6 per cent of second-class mail and 96.3 per cent of standard retail parcels were ahead of target, while 92.2 per cent of first-class mail was delivered the next working day after posting.

Mark Higson, Royal Mail’s managing director of operations and modernisation, said: “Our postmen and women work extremely hard to deliver to some of the most demanding quality of service standards in the whole of Europe.

“They are doing this against the backdrop of one of the largest transformation programmes in the UK.”
