Rspca hunts owner who left kitten to die in plastic bag

STAFF from the RSPCA are appealing for information after a baby kitten was found dumped in a carrier bag in the middle of a street in Chesterfield on Monday.

The carrier bag had been tied at the handles and was spotted by a woman who was walking down Spring Bank Road at lunchtime that day.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said: "The woman said she saw the bag move and then suddenly heard the sound of a faint meow.

"She untied the bag and found the frightened kitten inside."

The black and white female kitten is thought to be between eight and 12 weeks old.

The woman took her home and contacted the RSPCA.

She has since adopted the kitten.

RSPCA inspector Dave McAdam is now appealing for information as to how the kitten – which staff have named Gizmo – came to be dumped in the street.

He said: "It is hard to understand why someone would deliberately tie up a kitten in a plastic bag and leave it to die.

"Thankfully the kitten was found in the nick of time, but it could have been a very sad ending if it had been left to die in this bag.

"People should do all they can to prevent unwanted litters of kittens in the first place – there is plenty of help available with neutering, so there really is no excuse.

"We just wish that people would act responsibly and get their animals neutered and then we wouldn't have so many animals just being discarded like a piece of rubbish."

Those found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal could face a maximum six month prison sentence and/or a 20,000 fine.

Anyone with any information about Gizmo should call the RSPCA on 0300 1234999.
