Rugby fans make top conversion with lottery

A group of rugby fans got a double celebration yesterday as Welsh rugby legend Martyn Williams presented them with a cheque for £4m after winning the National Lottery.

The Valley Boys syndicate, made up of four friends from the Rhondda Valley, are hoping to head down under for the Rugby World Cup after pocketing £1,004,902 each.

Lorry drivers Terry Roberts, 50, and Mike Williams, 45, retired Lance Gifford, 50, and accounts manager Gerwyn Jones, 48, met at their local rugby club over 20 years ago.

They got the chance yesterday to meet Wales’ most-capped forward as they spoke at a press conference at the home of Welsh rugby, Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.

Mr Williams, from the syndicate, said: “It was absolutely fantastic to see Martyn there, he’s a valleys boy too and is originally from our area.”

It was the first time the friends had met a member of the Welsh rugby team, who they have supported all their lives.

“He definitely lives up to his reputation and we’re really hoping to see him play in the World Cup. He’s a brilliant player,” Mr Williams added.

The men are planning a dream trip to New Zealand to watch the Rugby World Cup in September and October.
