A run in the park

Chris Moulds, who runs Segway Sheffield, leads a tour of the National Trust's Clumber Park, near Worksop, followed by Lorren Taylor, 18, and Josh Turner, 19, both of Belton near Doncaster, and Rob Slack of Segway Sheffield in a demonstration of how the park can be toured this summer.

Rides and tours on the two-wheeled Segways are being set up by the Segway Sheffield firm, which was established after seeing the alternative mode of transport in Spain. Segways have been a big hit in the United States and many European cities but have only recently come to the UK.

Mr Moulds said: "Everyone who has tried the tour has come back with a smile on their face and commented on what a great time they had."

The motorised vehicles, which can reach a top speed of 12 miles an hour, are virtually silent, have zero carbon emissions and are simple to use as they have no accelerator or brake.

Visitors can ride a Segway on track rides or take part in one of two tours around Clumber Park. Riders must be aged 11 or over. The 35-minute tours at weekends cost 15 per person, or 4 for a trial session.
