Runaway rail wagons kill three

Three people died when runaway railway wagons broke loose from a freight train at an industrial port in Oslo yesterday.

They rolled for about three miles before slamming into the port terminal, where some of them fell into the water.

The victims had been working in or around the building, which collapsed from the impact. Nobody was on the train.

Vegar Halveg, who works for a transport company at the port, said he heard a loud screech and looked out the window to see several empty cargo train wagons speed past. "They were going much faster than they usually do, so we realised something was wrong," he said. "The last one was practically airborne."

Mr Halveg said several wagons derailed and one of them hit a dump truck.
