The Russians are coming... with show inspired by toys

Called Matroyshka – the Russian name for the nesting dolls – the exhibition has been created by artist Kate Sully and is made up of both wall pieces and mixed media sculptures.

Ms Sully said of the newly opened exhibition: "Exploring the Matroyshka as one of the exhibition's elements manipulates the iconic image of the dolls as they often represent a family whilst telling a story, yet my family of dolls suggest a very different tale.

"Using the highly decorative design allows me to exploit the familiar and appealing nature of the dolls and supplement the design with other elements relevant to my version of the stories we have in the world today.

"The exhibition is both playful and sinister, using imagery which is highly seductive but ultimately flawed by mankind's design."

Exhibits on show include Mother Nature, a pair of large Russian doll bookends, and five wall-mounted 3D dolls that aim to explore contemporary issues such as recycling and gambling.

Matroyshka runs at The Point, at 16 South Parade, until Friday, January 7. The Point is run by registered charity Doncaster Community Arts (Darts).
