Safety at junctions in city to be improved

ROADWORKS to improve safety at two busy junctions in Sheffield are set to begin later this month.

The first of the schemes will begin next Monday, January 24, at the junction of Heavygate Road and Northfield Road in Walkley.

The works are set to take place after the Central Community Assembly, one of Sheffield Council's seven community assemblies, asked for improvements at the busy junction.

As a result, the junction is set to be re-shaped and a pedestrian crossing will also be installed.

It is expected that the roadworks will take about five weeks to complete and, during the works, temporary two-way traffic signals will be in place.

A second roadworks scheme aims to improve safety along Dyche Road in Jordanthorpe, between Hazlebarrow Crescent and Lingfoot Crescent, by installing improved crossing facilities, street lighting and speed humps.

The scheme is expected to take three weeks to complete and a diversion will be required on one of those days because Dyche Road will be closed to traffic when road humps are installed.

John Charlton, Sheffield Council's director of Street Force, said: "Local people asked for road safety improvements in both these areas and we've planned them to minimise any disruption.

"The work will be completed as quickly as possible, but as always the schedule is subject to the weather conditions."

Various other roadworks are also currently under way in Sheffield.

Archer Road in Millhouses will have temporary traffic lights for water main works until Sunday, January 23.

Waterworks also mean that temporary traffic signals will be on Ringinglow Road in Bents Green until Monday, January 31.

Traffic lights and diversions are currently operating during repairs to the road in and around Mill Road in Ecclesfield.

Those roadworks are currently under way and will last until April or May.
