Safety Week visits for autistic pupils

PUPILS at Britain’s largest school for children and young people with autism have welcomed local police and firefighters as part of a week of lessons about safety.

A working fire engine has been at the Robert Ogden School to teach youngsters about fire prevention, and police dogs and their handlers were also due to visit as part of the Safety Week.

Barnsley’s mayor, Coun Karen Dyson, also visited the school in Thurnscoe yesterday, and today South Yorkshire Police’s mounted section plan a visit with some of its horses.

Principal Gillian Roberts said: “We are so happy to have the chance to show the mayor our school. We hope the day provides a taste of the fantastic achievements that the students here at the school make.

“It is also great to have the local community fire and police services in to talk. They have such valuable information to share and the children and young people at the school are thrilled to see them and the horses, dogs and vehicles.

“The Robert Ogden School is an important part of the local community and we are delighted to have the opportunity to engage in this way with community figures and services in the region.”
