Salon fined over hair dye reaction
Helen Harvey, then 17, went to the Supercuts Salon in Princes Quay, Hull, in September 2009 for her hair to be coloured.
Part of Supercuts brand concept is “never an appointment” and a colour treatment was carried out straight away without anyone asking whether she had any allergies or carrying out a test.

Hide AdAfter the treatment her face and head swelled up and she suffered blistering on her scalp, which needed treatment with steroids and antihistamines.
An investigation was then carried out by Hull Council’s Health and Safety Inspection team.
Regis UK Limited, trading as Supercuts, pleaded guilty at Hull Magistrates to a charge under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
Magistrates imposed a fine of £3,000, with costs of £2,472 awarded to Hull Council.

Hide AdAssistant head of city safe Trevor Todd said the hairdressing industry were well aware of the hazards of hair dye and it was “absolutely crucial” that salons followed manufacturers’ safety instructions.
